Grammar Captive

After some minor code adjustments Gate Seven visitor behavior is now being properly tracked and reported.  The data residue from the confusion that existed before the adjustments has not yet been removed though and must await Grammar Captive’s server upgrade that is just around the corner.  Within days Grammar Captive will be operating in a scalable cloud environment with streaming — a great place to be for a start-up company with many future unknowns.

Although the move has yet to be consummated a new venue for Grammar Captive has been found, and the rude interruption that has prevented further podcast development will soon be brought to an end just in time for fall production.

In the meantime, more tracking and reporting can be expected in the several weeks ahead.  One important new concept to which you might look forward is something called goal tracking!

Six of the seven gates of the Seven Gates splash panel are now being tracked by gate number and named event.  The seventh gate is not yet tracking correctly, but I hope to attend to this matter soon.  For the moment its failure to appear remains a mystery.

Grammar Captive is now tracking the behavior of the Seven Gates splash panel — Grammar Captive’s semi-dynamic, gallery-like introduction to the Grammar Captive project and website.

By way of preview, you are welcome to click on the menu option Splash Panel listed under the subheading Visitor Profile in the navigation bar on the Grammar Captive mainpage.

For the moment visitor behavior is only reported for Gate One and its associated slides.  Information for all of the gates will soon be listed in a more consolidated and more easily readable format.

From a developmental point of view this is Grammar Captive’s first segmented bulk request. In short, with one HTTP request Grammar Captive is now able to limit the amount of information that it obtains before it is reported.  This will not only speed up future reporting, but it will allow even greater precision in what is actually reported.

This is an important step forward.

Bulk requests have been implemented for the Sponsor Overview option under Visitor Profile in the navigation bar on the Grammar Captive mainpage.  Although there remains a pause before the data appears, it is significantly shorter than before.

A working copy of the new Event Profiles panel is now available.  You can see it by clicking on the words Event Profiles under the subheading Visitor Profile in the navigation bar of the Grammar Captive mainpage.

As time passes many more events and ways to count them,  as well as many new event categories will be added.  Of the three pages Looking Glass, Sponsor Overview, and Event Profiles this latter will likely become the most valuable.

Two new features including a menu bar for event categories and the introduction of bulk tracking for the Your Data and You and the Sponsor Overview panels are anticipated in the near future.

I am still looking for a suitable place to complete the first podcast and create future additional podcasts.  Still another relocation has slowed development still again.

The mountain path is rocky and steep, but I like good views and the additional effort will likely be worth it.

Matomo bulk requests are now possible on the Grammar Captive website and will soon be implemented in the Visitor Profile section of the Navigation Bar.  This should greatly speed up the loading time of key tracking statistics.

A new panel entitled Event Profiles has been added under the Visitor Profile section of the Navigation Bar.  Although still under construction this page will provide an important source of information for everyone involved with Grammar Captive.

Though no new progress on Grammar Captive’s first podcast has been made, a place to podcast with a consistent background environment has been found.

All should be implemented very soon.

Hopefully Grammar Captive’s tardiness in ushering in the new summer is not a premonition for what the fall will bring.

After many weeks working on the reporting side of Matomo, work has begun on the tracking side.  Grammar Captives first three event listeners were put into place today.

Also, Grammar Captive’s introductory podcast is nearly completed.  The Intro begins with an anonymous South Asian rhythm followed by a piano étude from Chopin. The Outro has yet to be decided, but the entire podcast will likely end in some sort of drum beat.

I was once told in a personal conversation with a renown sitar player that Western and Eastern music could never meet.  As I believe in both separation and fusion, the two sounds are separated by silence and my voice.

Slowly, but surely, the excitement of Matomo is returning.  What before seemed a very large, perhaps even insurmountable hurdle, now appears surmountable.  In order to jump the hurdle, however, Grammar Captive will have to relocate to a less expensive workspace.  This will release funds for the purchase of a scalable cloud as well as a private secure server that will facilitate the Matomo jump.  The scalable cloud will be great for initial growth, for two important reasons: one, visitors will not have to worry about delays in server speed; and two, Grammar Captive will can pay according to visitor demand.  More visitors mean more potential revenue, and a better ability to pay.

In the meanwhile, Grammar Captive has added several new features to the Sponsors Overview section under the menu item Visitor Profile in the Mainpage navigation bar.  These features include a section entitled Return Visitors and a new category of measurement under All Visitors entitled Visitor Interest.  This latter feature is of special interest because it allows potential sponsors to see how visits are distributed over the number of pages visited and the amount of time spent on the site with each visit.  And, yes, there is more.

In passing, certain inadequacies regarding Grammar Captive’s responsive design — internet jargon for how a webpage appears on a smartphone — have been overcome.  Firstly, on the podcast homepage clicking on Podcast Index under the Concept or Form and Use category automatically scrolls your viewport to the proper index.   Also, the width of the middle section no longer appears narrower than the rest of the sections (header, navigation bar, side-bar, and footer) when the entire site is viewed in stacked column mode — an important feature of responsive design.

Now for the bad news.  Unfortunately, the tedious formatting that went into the design of Grammar Captive’s first podcasts created many, many months ago must be redone, as the audio templates that resulted were lost when the iMac’s hard disk failed.  Development, like life, is rarely a straight line ….
